It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of our dear friend and scleroderma warrior, Josephine Battyany.
Josephine was the Foundation's co-founder in 1980 and its first paid employee, serving as our Office Manager.
Josephine was diagnosed with scleroderma in the 1970's and lived fearlessly with purpose and just enough feistiness to set quite an example for all. She was lovingly referred to as Wonder Woman and even had a plaque naming her as such on her desk. Everyone was in awe of her strength and steadfast purpose to support the scleroderma community then, and now.
Josephine retired just as the pandemic hit in March of 2020. In late 2021 she fell and broke her hip and was in and out of the hospital ever since. When she was at home, she would always accept visits. Conversations were special and even if having any difficulties, she would welcome you with the biggest smile, especially when bringing food from El Pollo Loco - her favorite!
Josephine's impact on the Scleroderma Foundation of California and all scleroderma communities will be enduringly remembered and celebrated. Her dedication and commitment have left an indelible mark on the lives of many.
As we bid farewell, we take solace in knowing that her legacy is a testament to her tireless efforts and contributions which continue to inspire all those affected by scleroderma.
Rest in peace, dear Josephine. You will forever remain our Wonder Woman!
